<Slovenian composer, pianist, harpsichordist, and saxophonist Mirko Lazar (1965-) works in the fields of contemporary music and jazz. He studied classical piano, jazz piano, and saxophone at the Conservatory in Graz, Austria, and harpsichord and baroque music at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, the Netherlands. He began composing at an early age, but only occasionally taught himself. As a solo saxophonist, composer, and conductor, he played with the RTV Slovenian Big Band for 15 years. He regularly writes for Slovenia's two major symphony orchestras, the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Slovenian Radio Symphony Orchestra, in addition to such foreign orchestras as the Stuttgart State Orchestra, the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Zurich. He is also a jazz musician. He is also active as a jazz musician, participating in many jazz festivals, including the World Exposition in Hanover 2000, and has recorded over 50 LP records and CDs, including 30 solo albums.His work includes orchestral, operatic, chamber, jazz and contemporary ballet productions, and he regularly writes for numerous film producers, theaters and dance performers. In 2005, he was awarded Slovenia's most prestigious art prize, the "Presernov Foundation Prize", and in 2010 his orchestral and chamber works were awarded the Ljubljana City Art Prize "Jupancic Prize".
